FRIENDS of the Minnesota Orchestra believes that music enhances life and that music education is essential to livelong learning. We study research that tells us that playing an instrument increases brain function. At the same time we see schools de-emphasizing music.

Using our unique connection with the Minnesota Orchestra, FRIENDS of the Minnesota Orchestra is able to address these needs is a powerful way, second to none. We have created education programs that bring music and orchestra instruments to those who might not have the life opportunity to experience the Minnesota Orchestra.

Each of the following programs is managed and run by our volunteers. We would love to have you join us. Click HERE to volunteer.

The story is selected from our library of original musical scores, commissioned by FRIENDS of the Minnesota Orchestra. The Kinder Konzerts in the Hall program is repeated 48 times each season, reaching over 6,000 children. The program also provides two well-attended teacher workshops each year to help classroom teachers integrate the Kinder Konzert experience with state education standards.

Kinder Konzerts on the Road brings our live and lively classical music programs directly to inner-city elementary schools in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area. Similar to our Kinder Konzerts in the Hall program, an ensemble of Minnesota Orchestra musicians performs one of our narrated musical stories and our volunteer guides run in-classroom music workshops for hand-on experience with orchestra instruments.

Young Artist Competition  is our annual competition that gives college-age musicians the opportunity to perform a work from the standard repertoire onstage at Orchestra Hall.  The competition is judged by musicians of the Minnesota Orchestra.  Our 2015-16 finalists will be judged by Maestro Osmo Vanska. Students receive useful feedback from the judges, and compete for prizes including cash awards, scholarships, and the opportunity to perform as a soloist with the Minnesota Orchestra.
