Kinder Konzerts™ in the Hall welcomes preschoolers to Orchestra Hall to:
- listen to a narrated story with live music performed by a Minnesota Orchestra ensemble
- learn simple music concepts
- touch and play with orchestral instruments
Kinder Konzerts is an award-winning music education program, and a repeat winner of the League of American Orchestra’s Gold Book Award. During their visit to Orchestra Hall, children participate in guided “sound factories” where they explore musical concepts and try orchestral instruments (e.g. a snare drum, violin, and cello). After the sound factory the children get to sit on the Orchestra Hall stage where an ensemble of Minnesota Orchestra musicians greet them, introduce their instruments with creative introductions, and then perform the chosen work together. The on-stage experience culminates with the featured story narrated to the featured composition.
Each year’s story is selected from the FRIENDS library of original musical scores, commissioned by our non-profit organization specifically to support the Kinder Konzerts program. Kinder Konzerts in the Hall is performed at least 36 times each season, reaching more than 6000 children, teachers, and adults.
The 2019-20 season will feature the story One-Dog Canoe, written by MN author, Mary Casanova. This unique story is perfect for preschool and kindergarten-aged children (4-5). The music is specially commissioned by the FRIENDS of the Minnesota Orchestra by local composer Daniel Nass just for this program. This exciting new commission will premier in September 2019.
