Bringing Kinder Konzerts into Schools
Kinder Konzerts on the road is an expansion and enriched version of Kinder Konzerts in Orchestra Hall. Kinder Konzerts on the Road reaches populations less likely to come to Orchestra Hall – children with limited resources. The program involves preschool, kindergarten and first-grade students.
The program has four components:
- Professional Development session for teachers and specialists focusing on strategies and materials for making deeper connections between music and literacy.
- Planning meeting for teachers
- “Mini-Residency” with two in-classroom workshops for students taught by a skilled and experienced teaching artist.
- Culminating Event featuring an in-school Kinder Konzerts featuring a Minnesota Orchestra chamber ensemble.
The classroom workshops for these young learners focus on specific goals discussed in the planning session and introduce and draw children deeply into a featured book. This year’s book is Max Found Two Sticks, written by Brian Pinkney with music by Janika Vandervelde.

The 2018-2019 book is Perfect Square by Minnesota author Michael Hall.
Kinder Konzerts standards-based and grounded in interdisciplinary links between music, literacy and other disciplines. In 2010 & 2016 Kinder Konzerts on the Road won the Gold Book Award of Excellence from the Volunteer Council of the League of American Orchestras. It was one of only eight programs in the country honored with the Award.
