The mission of FRIENDS of the Minnesota Orchestra is to encourage engagement with orchestral music through educational programs and performance opportunities.
Since our inception, we have donated more than $10 million to the Minnesota Orchestra. Hundreds of our volunteers contribute more than 10,000 hours each year to supporting the Minnesota Orchestra. Formerly known as WAMSO – Minnesota Orchestra Volunteer Association, the group was founded in 1949. We changed our name to FRIENDS of the Minnesota Orchestra in 2012 when it was agreed that “WAMSO,” an acronym of the original first name of the organization, the “Women’s Association of the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra,” no longer described our diversity and mission. Today, members and volunteers include men and women of various backgrounds, experiences, regions, and ages. Membership is open to all who love orchestral music, the Minnesota Orchestra, and enjoy the company of others who feel the same. Membership:
- is on a one-year basis
- enrollment begins each year in September and runs from September – August
- is offered at four levels (individual, household, contributor, and benefactor)
We are a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization, separate from the Minnesota Orchestra; our programs
and activities must be funded by FRIENDS membership and fundraising efforts.
