KINDER KONZERTS™ ON THE ROAD

Kinder Konzerts™ on the Road is a music education project sponsored by the FRIENDS of the Minnesota Orchestra. Founded in 1949 as WAMSO (Women’s Association of the Minnesota Orchestra), the mission of FRIENDS is to be a community partner to create and bring music learning opportunities to children and families. FRIENDS programs and events are focused on education, audience development, social activities and fundraising initiatives that increase engagement and participation with music. Kinder Konzerts™ at Orchestra Hall, now in its 42nd year, is one of FRIENDS’ oldest projects.

Kinder Konzerts™ on the Road is an expansion of the Kinder Konzerts’™ approach to providing musical experience in early childhood. Connections between music and literacy learning are at the heart of the project. This program has shown to have a huge impact on vocabulary development and language skills. One school saw an improvement in these skills from 3% of the students at or above proficiency to 77% of the students at or above proficiency.

The components of the Kinder Konzerts™ program includes:

  • An on-site facilitated planning session with teachers, arts specialists, teaching artist, and FRIENDS representatives.

  • Four classroom workshops led by a teaching artist for pre-K, K, and 1st grade students.

  • A fifth classroom workshop with an introduction and a hands-on experience with orchestra instruments, led by trained volunteers from the FRIENDS of the Minnesota Orchestra.

  • A Kinder Konzerts™ performed by an ensemble of Minnesota Orchestra musicians at the school.
